Hello again Scene Walker.
The summer has started and with it the time has come to travel “beyond Finland“.
During our last walk together in Porvoo, Finland i mentioned that the next time we meet again, it will be somewhere abroad.
During my 3-week work break, i traveled back to Belgium to catch up with family.
It’s always a positive experience and also a form of mental reset.
I managed to film several walks, but unfortunately i had to cancel many locations due to bad weather.
I decided to focus on locations that would represent Belgium historically and geographically.
The first location is the beautiful Herkenrode Abbey, located in Limburg, Belgium.
The name Herkenrode is derived from the Celtic language and means “an open place near a stream”.
A Catholic monastery of Cistercian nuns, founded in 1182 by Count Gerard of Loon
In 1796 the French occupying army invaded and the abbey was closed.
Many buildings fell into disrepair over the years and others, such as the church, have burned down due to fire.
Today, Herkenrode Abbey is a project for the future.
The plan is to restore and repurpose the remaining buildings and the surrounding landscape.
In 2022, Tourism Flanders purchased the abbey site.
Which marks the beginning of a tourist era.
