It’s time to step into the wonder of Finnish summer.
Welcome to the city of Hanko, in other words the “Riviera of Finland”.
Hanko is a popular summer destination for many Finns, because of its several sandy beaches and a multitude of leisure harbors.
Also worth mentioning is that the Hanko Peninsula is the southernmost point of Mainland Finland.
Hanko has a milder climate than the rest of Finland, it is often said that the sun is favourable to Hanko.
With just over 8,000 inhabitants, it is a fairly compact city.
Hanko is located 130 kilometers west of Helsinki.
Hanko is a bilingual city, consisting of half Finnish and half Swedish speakers.
The Port of Hanko is the 4th largest port in Finland.
In the 19th and early 20th centuries, Hanko was the preferred port for almost 400,000 Finns who left Finland for a new life in North America or Australia.
The cape is still guarded by the ‘Eye of Hanko’, a lighthouse whose twinkle was the passengers last sight of their homeland.
