Tonight you can accompany me for a late evening walk in the old town in Porvoo, Finland.
I have recorded a few other scenes around here. However, i’ll take you through areas that we haven’t seen yet.

I have included a great deal about the history in Old Porvoo as well.

When entering Old Porvoo, red riverside warehouses welcome you, as they have done for the past 300 years.
Red paint was used in the 18th century in honour of King Gustav III’s arrival.
It’s also used for protecting the logs from wind and sun damage.

We are currently walking towards the Old Town Square where its Town Hall is standing proud.
It’s the oldest town hall building in Finland, as the first written mention dates back to 1545.
However, it fell into disrepair and the current build was completed in 1764.
It’s currently in use as a museum.
You may have also noticed the unique street lighting.
Something very typical in Old Porvoo.

The Old Porvoo district covers an area of 18 hectares, approximately 550 buildings, of which 250 are residential, and around 700 people call Old Porvoo their home.
From Town Hall Square, you enter a neighbourhood of charming boutiques.
Antique stores contain remnants of the old days and the handicraft shops offer original and unique selection of crafts.
Specialising in toys (both new and antique), handicrafts designed by local artisans, and interior decoration items.
Chocolate is another great Porvoo souvenir gift. Brunberg Chocolate Factory was founded in 1871.

On top of the hill, in the heart of Old Porvoo, you can see the Porvoo Cathedral.
The church was originally made of wood and the oldest parts date from the 13th century. The first stone walls were built between 1410 and 1420.
Fire throughout the centuries has been a major problem. The first fire happened in 1508 by Danish forces and in 1571, 1590 and 1708 by Russian forces.
The latest fire was in 2006, luckily the inner ceiling was undamaged and the interior intact.
An 18-year-old man was convicted of arson and sentenced to six and a half years in prison.
Yes, it does happen also in Finland, citizens getting sentenced to prison.

Nowadays, Old Porvoo in its present form attracts visitors from all over the world.
Even though the neighborhood lives very much in the present, the atmosphere has not changed.
